Empowering and transforming the lives of youth through the sport of wrestling

In January 2012, we established Beat the Streets Los Angeles with the vision to create wrestling programs accessible to all youth in Los Angeles and surrounding communities. With great confidence, we can state that we are having a positive impact and are truly making a difference in the lives of youth. Through our sports-based youth development program, the boys and girls we serve have become better and more confident students and are living healthier lives thanks to the holistic approach we take in helping the most underserved in our community.

Beat the Streets Los Angeles offers free community and after-school wrestling programs for youth and high school students across Los Angeles and surrounding areas. Our programs focus on building confidence, discipline, teamwork, and healthy habits.

Coach and Mentor Spotlight

Cielo Portillo is the head coach at our El Monte program.

Cielo Portillo first joined Beat the Streets LA in seventh grade after a friend asked her to try wrestling with her. “At first, I didn’t really like it since I came from team sports, but once I learned throws, I fell in love with it.” She wrestled through high school, overcoming a shoulder injury, and found herself growing in confidence and discipline. “Wrestling taught me to stay consistent, work hard, and push through challenges. It helped me believe in myself.”

“My favorite thing about wrestling is being able to say I did it. There’s a quote we had on the wall at my high school: ‘Once you’ve wrestled, everything else in life is easier.’ It’s true—wrestling isn’t for everyone. It’s one of the hardest sports.”

Cielo’s passion for helping others is rooted deeply in her family story. Cancer runs in her family, and losing her little sister to a brain tumor and her grandmother during her freshman year shaped her dream of becoming a pediatric oncology nurse. She decided on this path as early as third grade. “I didn’t know the name of the job yet, but I told my mom I wanted to work with kids who have cancer.”

Today, she is a pre-nursing student preparing to enter an accelerated program, determined to honor her family through her work. Coaching brought her back to the place where her wrestling journey began. “If it weren’t for Beat the Streets, I might never have found wrestling. Now I get to give back to the program that started it all for me.” Watching young wrestlers grow from beginners to confident athletes has been the most rewarding part.

Beat the Streets LA’s Downtown Academy is back this Sunday, January 25

Our program welcomes youth at all levels, from beginners to advanced athletes, and focuses on building skill, discipline, and confidence both on and off the mat.

Practice Schedule:
• 9:15 AM – Beginner Youth
• 10:15 AM – Intermediate Youth
• 11:30 AM – High School

On Sunday, January 11, Beat the Streets LA hosted our Summer Enrichment Fundraiser at Mt. SAC, bringing together supporters, students, and community partners for an afternoon centered on youth, leadership, and community.

Student-athletes Saphiyah A. and Nyol J. shared powerful reflections on their experiences during the 2024–25 season, highlighting how Beat the Streets LA programming supports their growth as athletes, students, and leaders. Through Tomorrow’s Leaders workshops, National Team experiences, and leadership opportunities, they spoke about gaining confidence, practical skills, and a stronger sense of purpose both on and off the mat.

The energy continued as wrestling took center stage, reinforcing why the sport is such a powerful tool for connection and belonging. From young athletes sharing the mat with collegiate wrestlers to an elite women’s freestyle match featuring BTSLA alum Brianna Gonzalez and Katie Gomez, the day reflected wrestling’s ability to unite people across ages and backgrounds.

Thank you to everyone who attended or supported this event. Your generosity makes it possible for Beat the Streets LA to continue creating opportunities that empower young people and change lives.

We are reaching out directly to ask for your support at an important California Baptist University home dual being held at Mt. San Antonio College in partnership with Beat the Streets Los Angeles.
As you may be aware, CBU recently made the decision to cut its wrestling program. This dual is more than a match. It is a chance for the Southern California wrestling community to stand together, support student athletes, and show the impact wrestling has on young people at every level.
We are asking coaches, community members and fans to help fill the stands. A strong team presence sends a powerful message about the value of wrestling and the community that stands behind it. This event also supports youth access and opportunity through our partnership with Beat the Streets LA.
