From Whistles to Wrestlers: Tomorrow’s Leaders Gain New Skills

Last Sunday, the second Tomorrow’s Leaders Workshop brought together aspiring wrestlers for a full day of learning and growth. The agenda was packed with technical instruction, hands-on officiating practice, and high-level mat work.
The day began with an in-depth introduction to wrestling officiating. Quiche Roura, an Arroyo High School Educator, walked students through the fundamentals of folkstyle refereeing, focusing on positioning, signals, and decision-making. Sergio Camacho, Head Coach at Beat the Streets LA Oxnard program, followed with an overview of freestyle and Greco-Roman officiating, helping participants understand the unique rules and expectations at different levels of competition. These sessions went beyond just rulebooks—they challenged students to think like referees and develop a greater appreciation for the role of officials in the sport.
From there, it was time to hit the mats. Darian Cruz, Olympian, NCAA Champion, and current assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania, led a dynamic training session. Representing Puerto Rico on the international stage, Cruz has earned multiple Pan American medals and competed in the 2024 Summer Olympics. His coaching style emphasized pressure, reaction timing, and positional awareness, making his session both impactful and engaging.
One standout drill had athletes leaning forward while supported by a partner’s hands—until the support suddenly dropped, forcing them to shoot instantly. The exercise highlighted the importance of reaction speed, timing, and leveraging momentum in live competition.
This workshop truly embodied the mission of the Tomorrow’s Leaders program, which aims to equip student-athletes with essential skills for their post-high school journey. For the 2025-26 season, we are offering 10 in total workshops designed to nurture leadership, college readiness, and career preparation.
A huge thank you to Quiche Roura, Sergio Camacho, and Darian Cruz for sharing their time and knowledge with the next generation of Leaders.
