This summer, Beat the Streets Los Angeles brought 42 boys and girls—our largest group yet!—to Philadelphia for the 4th Annual Beat the Streets National Camp and Duals. They joined student-athletes from 11 BTS chapters nationwide for a week of friendly competition, cultural exchange, and learning.

Day one, we kicked things off with a tour of Drexel University, led by Assistant Coach Mauro Correnti. The team got to check out the wrestling room, hit the weight room, and tour beautiful architecture.

Drexel is a private research university known for its experiential learning model and vibrant Division I athletic program. Coach Correnti talked about their co-op program, which gives students the opportunity to gain paid, full-time work experience before graduation.

Then it was time to gear up—thanks to ASICS, a longtime BTS supporter. Each athlete was outfitted with wrestling shoes, shirts, water bottles, and a brand-new singlet for competition.

The next morning, everyone laced up for a run from the Palestra to the Rocky Steps, just like in the movie. After some photos with the Rocky statue, we hit a college and career fair, where students met reps from local schools and learned about post high-school pathways.

Our girls’ team enjoyed an intimate luncheon with 8x World Medalist Macey Kilty, who shared her journey—from wrestling with her siblings as a kid to competing on the world stage. She also spoke candidly about her mental process for overcoming conflict and loss. The girls asked questions, took photos, and were thrilled to meet one of their wrestling icons.

Later, Macey and Joey McKenna, World medalist and US National champion, hosted a wrestling clinic. They demonstrated some techniques and shared their personal insights on college wrestling with all camp attendees.

Six standout BTSLA athletes were invited to a high-level practice session led by University of Pennsylvania Head Coach Matt Valenti. This small-group experience offered one-on-one coaching in an intense and focused setting.

When it was time to compete, our athletes gave it their all. The boys’ team placed 5th, and the girls took home 2nd place—an incredible achievement!

To top it all off, Olympic Gold Medalist and 6x World Champion Jordan Burroughs surprised everyone with a visit! Our wrestlers had the chance to meet one of their heroes, snap photos, and collect autographs. Even the Philly Phanatic mascot showed up to cheer on the finalists!

And just when our athletes thought it couldn’t get better—we took a bonus trip to New York City. For many, it was their first time there. We toured Columbia University, ate New York style pizza, explored Central Park, visited the World Trade Memorial, rode the subway, and caught a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty.

This trip marked more than just wrestling matches. For many students, it was their first time flying, first time in Philadelphia, and first time in New York. For others, it was their first time representing Beat the Streets L.A. on a national stage. And for everyone involved, it was a chance to grow—on and off the mat.

We couldn’t have done it without the help of our donors, partners, coaches, volunteers, and supporters. Your belief in our mission and your investment in our youth continues to open doors, shape futures, and change lives.
