A Day of Heart and Hustle at the Fall Youth Championship

On Sunday, November 16, the gym at Belmont High School came alive as Beat the Streets Los Angeles welcomed 166 young wrestlers for the annual Fall Youth Championship. Athletes from 13 BTSLA programs arrived early, shaking out nerves, meeting friends from other sites, and getting ready to test the skills they have been building all season.

Wrestlers traveled from across the Greater Los Angeles area, including Oxnard, Topanga, Antelope Valley, El Monte, South LA, and San Pedro. Seeing so many communities represented in one space reminded us how far the sport reaches and how powerful it is when young people come together with a shared purpose.

From the first whistle, the day moved with real energy as athletes stepped onto the mat, some for the very first time and others eager to measure their growth from previous seasons. Match after match, they pushed through tough moments, applied what they have learned in practice, and supported one another with genuine team spirit. In the bleachers, families packed the gym and celebrated every takedown, showing pride in their children’s confidence and progress. Coaches felt that pride too, especially for the many new wrestlers who joined this fall and bravely stepped into competition with focus and heart.

We are grateful to our Tomorrow’s Leaders volunteers who helped run tables, manage match flow, and take on leadership roles throughout the day. Our Apprentice Coaches also played an important part in creating a welcoming experience for every athlete, including Tiarra B. from Oxnard, Jade M. from El Monte, and Alexzandra C. from South El Monte.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, partners, and volunteers, the Fall Youth Championship was offered at no cost to all participants. This support removes barriers and ensures that every young wrestler has the chance to compete, grow, and find community through the sport.

Events like this remind us why our mission matters. Wrestling may be the setting, but the lessons extend far beyond the mat. Confidence, perseverance, responsibility, and connection are built one practice, one match, and one moment at a time.

Thank you to everyone who made the championship possible. Congratulations to all of our athletes for their hard work and dedication. We look forward to the next event.
